January 6, 13, 20, & 27, 2019

Covenant Sunday School Class

The year 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the Trappist monk Thomas Merton who is acknowledged as one of the most influential literary-theologians of the twentieth century. In his role as writer and social critic, Merton articulates his conviction that nihilism, alienation, and divisiveness impede our efforts to discover a common humanity—a conviction that continues to challenge us as participants in the human condition. To honor the memory of Merton and his contributions to the canon of religious literature, we shall study his autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain and his volume titled Thoughts in Solitude in which he addresses the importance of quiet reflection in one’s spiritual formation. Victor Judge, the assistant dean for academic affairs at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, will lecture.

Embracing "Other":
Interfaith Sunday School and Westminster Academy Series

In this interfaith series, we will spend four weeks learning about the Jewish experience. We will explore everything from the Holocaust to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the realities of our own identities. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks says, “For though my faith is not yours and your faith is not mine, if we are each free to light our own flame, together we can banish some of the darkness of the world.” This is ultimately the goal of this series—to listen, to learn, and to love.
