Youth - Confirmation
Youth Ministry during COVID-19
As with all activities at Westminster, youth ministry activities are being affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The information below reflects activities during a typical year, many of which have been cancelled or modified in 2020. Follow WPC Koinoina on Facebook or Instagram or contact the youth staff to receive current information about programming for fall 2020 and beyond.
For the youth at Westminster, Confirmation is a two-year process which starts in 7th grade and ends in 8th grade. Confirmation is a valuable and formative experience in one’s faith life, and we invite participants to make it a priority. The Confirmation process is an opportunity to grow in faith in community with our peers, as well as with members of the Westminster congregation. The Youth Staff strongly believes that a commitment to being present and engaged is crucial to making the most of this process. We ask that each Confirmand sign a Covenant that encourages:
• participation in our attendance guidelines;
• participation as a beadle/acolyte in worship each semester;
• participation in at least one fellowship event per semester;
• participation in at least one local mission event; and
• participation in the NaCoMe Retreat.
7th graders begin their two-year Confirmation process with an overview of the Bible. Central to this year is beginning to understand the concept of grace, or God’s unconditional love. 7th graders will meet on Sunday mornings for Confirmation class from 9:45–10:45 am in Room 89. All 7th graders participate in the NaCoMe Retreat, during which they have the opportunity to explore the notion of God’s grace, recap important Biblical stories, and have time for fellowship with one another.
8th graders learn about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the church, and sacraments during the second half of their Confirmation process. As a part of these five units, scripture is examined and the beliefs of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are discussed and explained. 8th graders will meet on Sunday mornings for Confirmation Class from 9:45–10:45 am. All 8th graders participate in the NaCoMe Retreat (see video below), during which they write a class creed and create a video that symbolizes their beliefs.
