Living Waters for the World

Living Waters Team Looking for New Members

This little girl (below) at the Peniel Church in Iquitos was thrilled to have clean drinking water to carry home to her family!

Living Waters for the World (LWW), a mission resource of the Synod of Living Waters of the Presbyterian Church (USA), trains and equips mission teams to share the gift of clean, sustainable water with communities in need. LWW water treatment systems and related educational programs fill a critical niche in the world water crisis to communities with available but contaminated water. Since its inception, LWW has partnered with mission teams to empower local community leaders to install and operate nearly 400 clean-water systems in major developing areas of the world; and in 2005 expanded its mission to address water quality issues in the Appalachian Region of the United States.

The Living Waters for the World Ministry Team of Westminster Presbyterian Church began working in the Amazon basin of north central Peru in 2007.  In May 2008 a team led by Bill Kline, Beth Weaver and Bruce Spaulding installed our church’s first water purification system in a Scripture Union medical clinic in the Iquitos river community of Belen. In 2011 three more systems were installed in Peru: at the Puerto Alegria Boys’ Home, in the jungle near Iquitos; at the Peniel Church in Iquitos; and at the Kawai Boys’ Home on the Pacific coast about 50 miles south of Lima. Future trips to Peru are planned to continue to support our current partners; to develop future partnership opportunities; to provide education about health, hygiene, and hand-washing; and to install more water purification systems.

WPC’s Living Waters for the World team has also installed three in-home systems in Tazewell, TN, and we are working with the First Presbyterian Church of Cookeville to develop a network in needy areas of the Cumberland Plateau.

Westminster’s LWW team is looking for more members of the congregation to become involved in this ministry. Especially needed are members who can speak Spanish, but anyone with any background can be a help!  An initial step would be to attend “Clean Water University” to receive necessary training. Funds are available to partially support tuition. The next sessions at Camp Hopewell in Oxford, Mississippi are March 21-25, May 2-6, June 11-15, and September 5-9, 2012.  Opportunities exist to participate both in the work in Peru and in Tennessee. Opportunities are also available to support the teams who travel with fund-raising and with donations of clothing and needed items for the people served.  Any of the current team would be delighted to discuss in more detail how this mission of our church operates.
