Becoming a Member of Westminster Presbyterian Church

Each Sunday following worship, a member of our New Member Committee is available in the Parlor to greet those interested in exploring discipleship with Westminster. "The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership. One becomes an active member of the church through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all life. Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church" (PCUSA Book of Order, G-5.0100a). Individuals may become a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church by one of the following methods:
  • Profession of Faith: A person who has never been a member of any Christian church, or who has been baptized but never offically "joined" a church, makes a profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Certificate of Transfer: A person who is a member of some other Christian Church and wishes to unite with Westminster may request that the secretary write for her or his letter. If you signed a card expressing interest in membership at Westminster the membership secretary has already written for your church certificate.
  • Reaffirmation of Faith: Some churches do not transfer members, including but not limited to the Church of Christ, the Baptist Church, and the Roman Catholic Church. A person who is a member of one of these churches an wishes to join Westminster will be asked to reaffirm his or her faith in Jesus Christ. No "rebaptism" is required.
  • Affiliate Membership: A person who is a member of another Presbyterian church but who will only temporarily be in the Nashville area may use this category. An affiliate member is offically connected to Westminster for a period of one year while maintaining membership in her or his present church. The affiliate relationship may be renewed.
