Adult Education
Sunday Church School Classes
Adult Bible Study Fellowship: An intergenerational group engaging in in-depth Bible study each week, this group meets for dinner and conversation a few times each year. Until November this group will be meeting with other classes in Fellowship Hall. Plans are still being worked out for November and December. Glenda Anderson and Allison Duffey, class coordinators.
Choir Class: The Choir Class is specifically designed for members of the Adult Choir. The class meets from 9:15-10:00, which allows members to participate in Sunday School, then attend choir rehearsal for the 11:00 service. This fall the Choir Class will not meet as a separate class, but will join other class options. They expect to begin meeting again as a class in Spring.
Connections: Comprised of people in their 50s and 60s, the Connections Class has many empty-nesters and eager new grandparents. Members of this class travel greatly but continue to enjoy fellowship with one another throughout the year. Many in the class are described as “floaters” on Sunday mornings (i.e., they float to classes with topics that most interest them). Connections will be joining other classes in Fellowship Hall through the end of October and will meet together as a class in November and December.
Covenant: Begun in fall of 2006, the Covenant Class is geared especially for parents of Westminster youth. Started as a response to a desire on behalf of many of the parents for such a class. It is a community of mutual support, intentional growth, fellowship and service. Many former Pathfinders and Westminster 100’s have found a Sunday school class home here. This fall, the Covenant Class will be hosting a special class taught by K. C. Ptomey, Jr. and two lectures that other classes will be joining.
Good Samaritans:
Founded by Henry Goodpasture, this group gathers for senior fellowship and Bible Study. Using The Present Word Curriculum (CULS), the class meets each week for coffee, favorite hymns, and Bible study (which is generally offered in a lecture format) with their lead teacher, Jim Hoyal. While class participants have studied together for years, older and younger members and visitors are welcome. Juanita and Ray Lundell, class coordinators.(Goodpasture Hall)
Journey:
Using the discussion and sharing format, this class will use a short-term Disciple book study, “Invitation to John” with a guide by Robert D. Kysar. For those who have not been able to make the year-long Disciple commitment, this is a way to begin. Mark and Monique Dunlap, class coordinators. (M-110B)
Knitting Ministry:
This new offering invites those who love to knit and crochet to gather on Sunday mornings to use their gifts for the glory of God and support of others by making caps for our baptismal infants and prayer shawls for those undergoing medical treatment. Sarah Wilkinson, class coordinator. (M-112)
Murdoch Macleods:
Named for a former pastor who helped lead the congregation to its current location, this class is for men who seek in-depth Bible study, world religions studies, and fellowship. Wilford Fuqua, teacher. (M-305)
New Member Class:
Offered three times a year, this seven week class allows those interested in learning more about Westminster or those seeking to unite in membership to explore topics such as Reformed theology, worship, mission and service with members of the staff and lay leaders. Jim Crafton, coordinator; Tracy Moor and Carson Salyer, staff.
Search:
Are you looking for that fellowship group where you might find others who share your concerns and questions? Feel too young for some classes and too old for others? Have questions or concerns about your faith that you’re not sure how or where to raise? Search is a small group that, although focused on a theological theme, consists of group discussion and gentle leadership around the theme. Search can often be found at the movie theatre or Starbuck’s. Joan Schleicher, class coordinator. (M-311)
Tweeners:
If your children are in the “pre-teen” years of adolescence (generally 8-12) or if you are “in between” usual age and stage groupings, this class is for you. The focus of the class is topical ranging from traditional Bible study and spiritual nurture to issues around family balance, the role of sports, and the impact of culture. Quarterly fellowship opportunities and service options are also being planned.
Young Adults:
A community for the “college and career” crowd where singles and newly married can learn, grow, serve and care for one another. In addition to Sunday mornings, monthly off-site gatherings provide opportunities for fun and fellowship.
Young Families:
If you have young children (infant-elementary) no matter how old you are, come join this group for study and for regular social events, many for the whole family and some just for grown-up nights out. Many parents have children in Westminster’s Toddlers and Twos program and/or Westminster Kindergarten.
